Review of Slice of Cherry by Dia Reeves

I love red.  I love reading murder.  I love when an author wrote a book I was scared to write.

Kit and Fancy Cordelle are sisters of the best kind: best friends, best confidantes, and best accomplices. The daughters of the infamous Bonesaw Killer, Kit and Fancy are used to feeling like outsiders, and that’s just the way they like it. But in Portero, where the weird and wild run rampant, the Cordelle sisters are hardly the oddest or most dangerous creatures around.

It’s no surprise when Kit and Fancy start to give in to their deepest desire—the desire to kill. What starts as a fascination with slicing open and stitching up quickly spirals into a gratifying murder spree. Of course, the sisters aren’t killing just anyone, only the people who truly deserve it. But the girls have learned from the mistakes of their father, and know that a shred of evidence could get them caught. So when Fancy stumbles upon a mysterious and invisible doorway to another world, she opens a door to endless possibilities….




Slice of Cherry was a surprise.  A lovely, deadly surprise.  Its cover called out to me; bloody teacups - Yes, Please!?!  A quote on the front, "You always hurt the one you love."  WOAH!

I immediately captured my attention.  I totally judged this book by its cover.  I forgot everything else I had purchased and rushed home to start reading as soon as I could.  I devoured this book!

Author, Dia Reeves, wrote about a world I could believe in.  Even with all the "magic" and strangeness of it, everything made sense inside the world she created.

Now, the two main characters, sisters Kit and Fancy, are sweet young girls with a taste for murder.  They believe the inherited it from their serial killer father.  Either way, they do murder people - many people.  This is not the important part, however.  One of the overarching themes of this story is love.  Love for a sister so deep you would kill for her.

A quote from Fancy's dream diary:
"A doctor examined me and Kit and said the reason we were sick was because Kit had my heart and I had hers.  But when he switched our hearts, they stopped beating."

But just as sisters love each other, they too can hate.

Another quote from Fancy's dream diary:
"Kit was running ahead of me through the woods on a path made of pink glass.  I tried to keep up but my legs weren't as swift as hers and the glass broke under the weight of my feet, bloodying them, but Kit still wouldn't slow down.  When I fell, the glass shattered all around me and cut me into seventeen pieces."

The excerpts from Fancy's dream diary were my favorite part of this book.  They are so uncensored.  They really add another dimension to the book.

To get on with it I suppose, I loved this book.  I love, love, LOVED this book.  It gave me goosebumps AND laughter.  It kept me up late reading and imagining Kit and Fancy's escapades.  The imagery is so vivid it crept into my dreams.

If you might want to try something totally different, read this book.  As the author says on her website, "I wrote books that make people feel squicky."

So here's to feeling "squicky" and reading a fantastic book.

First Things First

You're probably all wondering what the hell a red purse has to do with anything.  Especially books, for that matter.  Well in my world, a purse is a vital piece of life, and especially one that is big enough to hold several books.  It also must be red enough to satisfy my love of all things red.  (Most things red.)

Anyway, I'd like to convey my purpose, share with you all the amazing books I find, read them, review them, and at sometimes, post things I may be writing for my own novel adventure.
